Sculpting from reference is how likeness happens. Re:Form gives each of the six axis views — Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, Bottom — its own reference image, standing in the world where you can sculpt against it.

Loading a reference

  1. Press 5 to switch to Ortho projection — the Reference section appears in the right panel.
  2. Pick the view the image belongs to (Front, Right…) from the row of chips.
  3. Click the image slot and choose a file. PNG, JPEG, TIFF and PSD all load.

The image appears on that view's plane in world space — it stays put while you orbit, readable from its own side of the model, and each view keeps its own image and settings.

Fitting the image to your model

With an image loaded, the adjustment controls appear:

  • Scale — the size of the image's longest side, in world units.
  • Rotation — turn the image within its plane.
  • Offset X / Y — slide it around until the drawing lines up with the model.
  • Opacity — how strongly it shows; keep it low enough that the sculpt still reads.
  • In front — draw the image in front of the model instead of behind it, for tracing silhouettes directly.
  • Flip H / V — mirror the image; Grey desaturates it, which makes form easier to judge than colour.

The master References toggle hides or shows all views' images at once without unloading them.

A workflow that works

  1. Collect front and side views of your subject at the same scale.
  2. Load the front image into the Front view and the side into Right, then match their Scale and Offset so the two agree — the grid helps here.
  3. Press 1 and block the front silhouette; press 3 and block the profile.
  4. Drop back to Perspective (5) to judge the actual 3D form — orthographic references guide, but perspective tells the truth about volume.

Reference images are saved inside your .clay project, positions and settings included — reopen the file and the setup is exactly as you left it.

Next up, the brush set proper: Build brushes.
